Faculty Successes

Fall 2005

Farrell Vernon, assistant professor of music and jazz studies, completed his doctorate in March, after his doctoral dissertation, Jimmy Heath: An Analysis and Study of His Tenor Saxophone Improvisational Style Between 1959 and 1998 Through Selected Transcriptions, was accepted by the University of Northern Colorado. Vernon participated in the UNC commencement in May. He was very busy over the summer, organizing and starting the first annual IPFW Summer Jazz Camp. Over 40 area students participated in this weeklong camp. Vernon also performed in the orchestra for the IPFW Department of Theatre production of The Music Man and the Fort Wayne Civic Theatre production of Beauty and the Beast.

Assistant Professor Gregg Gausline recently guest-conducted with Hong Kong Young Muscians’ Wind Orchestra at the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles International Convention in Singapore. Gausline established the Fort Wayne Youth Wind Ensemble and will be conducting the Indiana Bandmasters Association Northeastern All-District Band and the Mid-Maryland All-Region Band this year.

This fall, Assistant Professor Todd Prickett was named the conductor of the Fort Wayne Youth Chorale, the most advanced ensemble of the Fort Wayne Children’s Choir program. Prickett again participated in the 2005 Oregon Bach Festival Concerts as a tenured member in the festival’s world-renowned, 54-voice professional chorus. Prickett has also performed as a guest conductor and tenor soloist at the Mississippi University for Women in March 2005 and as guest artist and tenor soloist with the Fort Wayne Philharmonic Players Association in August. Prickett performed Les Noces at Michigan State University in collaboration with their voice faculty, piano faculty, and University Chorale in February. He also conducted a performance of John Rutter’s Requiem last month in commemoration of 9/11.

Barbara Resch, associate professor and director of music education, was appointed Indiana chair of the Society for Music Teacher Education. Associate Professor Linda Wright-Bower attended the regional AMTA music therapy conference in Milwaukee and conducted a fivehour workshop on protocols, evidence-based music therapy practice, and marketing.
