Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Do I need to attend SOAR?
Answer: All incoming freshman are required to meet with an academic advisor. Your academic adviser will assist you in understanding the requirements of your major and in selecting courses. We want you to understand the issues that influence successful course scheduling, and, ultimately, a successful first semester at IPFW.
Q. Why are placement tests required?
Answer: Placement tests are required of all students. The test results are used for placement at appropriate instructional levels.
Q. Are parents required to attend SOAR?
Answer: Parents are not required to attend SOAR. We welcome you to attend special programming we have planned for parents on SOAR dates. Please note that family members are not able to attend the advising and registration for classes session with their student.
Q. What is FERPA?
Answer: Once you begin classes at the university, all of your records including, but not limited to, academic records, financial records, medical records, etc., are protected by the Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). This law, in working to protect your privacy, can appear to be a roadblock to family members or can work as a catalyst for parents and students to communicate about things like grades and bills. Specific questions about FERPA should be directed to the Registrar.
Q. What is my.IPFW?
Answer: The official mode of communication on campus is email. The university's portal — my.IPFW — is your link to WebMail, WebCT, OASIS (how you register for classes), student calendar of events, academic info, financial info and Helmke Library. IPFW will use email to communicate with you about registration, billing and other important information. Account activation is a must for all students!
