This project explores The Shining by Stephen King and asks the question: Is this novel worthy of canonization? The research begins by defining the Western canon, tracing its origins, and discussing its points of contention. Once these characteristics are established, King is compared to commonly accepted canonized authors. Finally, The Shining is explored in detail and an excerpt from the novel is suggested for an anthology. Once The Shining is deconstructed, one must determine if and where King belongs in the Western canon.
