What Would Betty Do? Ask IPFW Student Nurses

(Fort Wayne, May 14, 2009) -- WWBD...What Would Betty Do? Most of us don’t know who Betty is, let alone what she would do. But Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) student nurses know who she is and have made the nursing theorist a symbol in their quest to help a fellow student.

This spring, the IPFW nursing students put together a fundraiser to benefit Stephanie Morr Denman, a mother and IPFW nursing student who was recently diagnosed with stage three thyroid cancer and is uninsured. So far, they have raised $1,140 to go toward her medical expenses.

So, what does Betty have to do with Denman? The creative student nurses tied their curriculum to the cause of helping Denman. Along with collecting donations, the students sold t-shirts with the words WWBD . . . What Would Betty Do? Betty Neuman created a nursing model that provides a holistic overview of the physiological, psychological, sociocultural, and developmental aspects of human beings. “The funny thing about the t-shirts is that in our curriculum, the students often feel they study the application of the theory ad nauseam,” said Carol Sternberger, chair and professor of the Department of Nursing.

Denman graduates this May with an Associate of Science with a major in nursing and plans to continue on to earn a Bachelor of Science. Students from the Department of Nursing are still accepting donations. Those interested in donating can contact Tascha Gayheart at 260-416-2286. The Department of Nursing is part of the IPFW College of Health and Human Services.
