Larry Life came to IPFW's Department of Theatre in 1971 after receiving degrees from Ball State University (B.S., 1967; M.A., 1969) and became the department's chair in 1994. His professional credits included work in New York, several films, and guest director and choreographer for numerous local theatrical organizations as well as at various venues around the country. Though he often staged productions that stirred controversy, two of his shows (Dames at Sea, 1973; and Hair, 1976) received the national Amoco Award of Excellence and were presented at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. during the American College Theatre Festival. In 1990 he was the first recipient of the Ulmer Award and in 1992 was honored as the Indiana Theatre Assocation's Outstanding Artist-Educator. He died unexpectedly at home on February 10, 2007.
