Have you ever wanted to travel to Europe? What would you say if you could do that while earning honors credit towards your degree? If you are interested in such a class, check out Architecture and Urban Form (INTR 220), held during Summer Session II (July 4-July18). This 3 credit hour interdisciplinary course examines the history of Rome through its art, architecture, and urban space. Neither prerequisites in art or architecture, nor fluency in the Italian language are necessary. The course is team-taught and utilizes the expertise of each faculty member through tours and lectures. The visual arts component of this course places special emphasis on major time periods of Roman history from the Etruscans through the 17th century, methods of analysis; the importance of historical and cultural context, and changes and developments of styles. Students will gain insight as to the role that visual arts played in the political, social, and religious milieu throughout Roman history. Additionally, students will gain first-hand experience interpreting ancient sites using artistic, historical, archaeological, and anthropological methodology. Taking advantage of archeological sites, museums, and monuments in the urban environment, this course incorporates lectures and guided studies, permitting students to work from primary sources. Additionally, students will gain first-hand experience interpreting works of art and how Roman art and architecture influence and effect our own western artistic sensibilities.
