Advising

Tips for Success

Making the most of Academic Advising Opportunities

  • Schedule advising appointments in advance of prime registration times
  • Run an unofficial degree evaluation to track your progress. Bring it along to your advising session, making any areas  you question or do not understand
  • Make notes of any questions or concerns you have ahead of time to avoid forgetting
  • Arrive on time for your appointment, prepare to make good use of the time
  • Be open with your advisor about your personal goals, your study habits, and your concern about classes
  • Keep an advising folder containing:
    1. a copy of the unofficial degree evaluation
    2. a degree requirements sheet (bingo sheet)
    3. a copy of your most recent transcript
    4. notes from previous advising sessions
    5. credit transfer reports from IPFW Admissions (for transfer students), etc.
