Exploring Careers

ARE YOU HAVING SOME DIFFICULTY IN CHOOSING A CAREER?

You’re not alone—many people aren’t sure of what they want to do for a career. Here are some activities and websites to help get you started on your lifelong career journey.

Visit The Office of Career Services at Kettler 109.
Here you can see a career counselor; take various career assessments to see which careers fit you best; use the computer program FOCUS to assess your interests, skills, and values, and research educational and occupational information; and use the Career Services library to research occupations and educational options.

Take a class to help you make career decisions.
EDUC X210 is a two-credit hour, 16-week course taught in the fall and spring, that focuses on in-depth self assessment, occupational exploration, career decision making, and job search strategies. The Division of Continuing Studies offers a variety of classes for personal enrichment, career advancement and corporate training. These are offered to the public. Visit the Continuing Studies website for more information.

Conduct an informational interview to find out if a career is a good match for you.
One of the best and most overlooked ways to get accurate information about a career is to interview professionals who are actually working in that career. An information interview has multiple advantages for your career exploration and development, which include getting “inside” information about what a career is really like, networking with professionals in the field, and enabling you to gain experience and confidence.
