Learning to Write and Writing to Learn: Best Practices across the Curriculum

Keynote speaker Harvey Daniels will focus on best practices in teaching and learning with an emphasis on writing. He will demonstrate practical strategies for all grade levels and discuss what literacy education means in today’s classrooms. He will then lead separate breakout sessions throughout the day for elementary, middle, and high school/college strands.
Daniels’ work includes A Community of Writers, RethinkingHigh Schools, Subjects, Mini-lessons for Literature Circles, Best Practices, Content-Area Writing and his most recent, Comprehension and Collaboration: Inquiry Circles in Action.
Concurrent sessions will run opposite these sessions featuring grade-level presentations from many of Appleseed’s teacher consultants who will address a variety of best practices for twenty-first century literacy. The Appleseed Writing Project will offer breakout sessions that address issues of literacy, including the use of technology in the writing classroom, diversity, addressing ELL, and using writing to learn. The program will feature strands in primary/elementary, junior high/ middle school, high school, and college/university. Presentations will connect theory to classroom practice and community, including audience interaction and model collaboration among different subject and grade levels.

No refunds will be given after Wednesday, September 23, 2009.
Pre-registration is highly recommended as Appleseed cannot guarantee food or conference materials for those registering the day of the conference.
